One Room Challenge: Week 1, The Intro

Hello!! Welcome to my new blog page! The Spring 2021 One Room Challenge is now in full effect, and I'm so excited to be a first time guest participant. The One Room Challenge is hosted bi-annually to allow designers to share the process of completely transforming a room in their own spaces. I'm so excited to see what other projects people are taking on this spring in their own homes. I hope you enjoy the ride with me as I navigate through these next 8 crazy weeks! I plan on walking you through the entire design process of how I conceptualize and design a room.

Just in case you were wondering...I'm Mercedes, the Founder + Principal Designer of Abode Staging + Design based in Brooklyn, NY. I'm a color lover, salsa addict and have cultivated a love for finding inspiration everywhere.

Now to jump in!

Over the next 8 weeks, I will completely transform my living room into a living and office lounge. Since business is rapidly growing, I need a workspace where I can spread out samples, mood boards and floor plans. Since my samples (i.e. wallpaper, tile, etc.) are now overflowing, this room is in dyer need of an upgrade! This year marks the 15th year I've been in my apartment. I know, I know, most New Yorker's move around quite a bit, but in the next post, you will learn why I'm so attached to this apartment.

Let's dive into the before pictures shall we? As you will see, I'm in the process of cleaning out the room and throwing away old things.

Plan of Action:

  • All of the existing furniture will be replaced with new furniture. Some of these items were donated to me by family members when I first moved in 15yrs ago and I'm now just starting to upgrade. Time flies!

  • I plan on creating a custom cabinet file system along the TV wall to provide a home for client files and the many samples I've collected.

  • Tall bookshelves will be added for book storage, so that the room can have a mini library section.

  • This space has to function as a living, dining room and office space. The goal is to create a space that can function as a showroom to have clients come up and be inspired!

The Plan:

This is a birdseye view of a spatial plan done in Sketchup to see how the furniture floor plan is laid out.
